Online interviews are now standard – yet many candidates still do not take them seriously enough.
Digital interviews via Zoom or Teams are a fixed part of the process in many organisations, at least in the early stages. Both sides save time, travel costs and effort. Initial
interviews are often shorter than in-person meetings – frequently limited to 30 minutes. In terms of content, however, online interviews are no different: the focus is on personal fit and professional suitability – just as in a face-to-face setting.
Despite growing familiarity, mistakes are easy to make. Camera, lighting and background deserve just as much attention as the content. Your choice of clothing should match what you would wear in a personal interview. Eye contact online is created by occasionally looking directly into the camera – not at the screen. And gestures can quickly appear exaggerated in close-up: less is more.
A trial run with someone you trust can increase confidence. And that confidence matters most where it counts: in the conversation itself.
